This chapter is about the background and history of environmental reporting.
Very interesting -- Bill
The section of this chapter which discusses how Velsicol Corporation prepared a brochure, called “The Desolate Year” in anticipation of Rachel Carson’s novel Silent Spring, to describe “a world beset by famine, disease and insects because insecticides had wrongly been banned” (28) was notable for me.
This section shows how media can be truly difficult to distinguish because during this time the publics were getting opposing opinions, Rachel Carson versus the Pesticide companies, on the benefits of DDT. With this directly conflicting information how can anyone make an educated and informed decision on the benefits and costs of pesticides and which have more towards the environment and human health? This highlights that education is extremely important, but not just any education, the education to think critically.
